I visited my cousin a few weeks ago in Boston, He has a really lovely cat who is spoiled and adored by his whole family. But while they love their cat, they don't speak her language. They were eager to ask me about all sorts of "odd" behaviors of hers, and were fascinated to learn how so many of these things are rooted in hunting and survival behaviors, and are not odd at all when you think about them that way.
My most interesting exchange, though, was with the cat. One afternoon she was sitting on the windowsill and I approached her quietly. When I got near her, I crouched down so my head was just below hers, then slowly extended my face out and up for a nose kiss. She looked a bit taken aback, but then a light seemed to go on in her eyes. "Aha! You speak cat!" she seemed to be saying. And then she reached out with her nose and gave me a sweet nose kiss.
For the rest of my weekend visit, she followed me around. No matter how loving their family, cats do enjoy the company of those who speak their language. Wouldn't you?
