My Secret Hug

By Beth Adelman for Cat Facts

All my cats love to sit next to me on the couch and snuggle up around my legs in bed, but while Mei Mei will tolerate a short hug now and then, my tabbies really do not like to be held. That's a pretty common feline preference, because when a cat has all four paws off the floor she feels like she has totally lost control.

I do occasionally pick them up anyway, very briefly, because I believe my cats need to be accustomed to this so that I can plop them in a carrier, give them medicine or check them for problems. They need it. It's good for them. At least, that's the excuse I use. The fact is, sometimes I just want to pick them up and hug them to me. Sometimes they're so adorable and loving and sweet that I just have to. It's my little secret. Don't tell!
