My husband and I recently took a trip to the New York Aquarium, which happens to have, among its thousands of sea creatures, several varieties of catfish. I've always though these fish got their name because of the long feelers that have on their face, which resemble whiskers. But I found out the similarities are much closer.
For instance, in a tank labeled "Fancy Catfish" a couple of very frilly little fish were nibbling away on a lettuce leaf in a frenzy of excitement. A lettuce leaf? But catfish are carnivores! So are cats, but my Mei Mei actually screams at me when I make a salad, until I give her a piece of lettuce. It's the only food she begs for at the table, as well.
Then we saw a tank labeled "Upsidedown Catfish." Inside were two fish lying on the bottom who had turn their heads turned upside down, the way Yin Yin and Yang Yang do when they're competing in the Cute Olympics. And both those fish had perfect tabby markings. I am not making this up!
