The Feline Senses

By Beth Adelman for Cat Facts

All this month our feature articles will be taking a look at the feline senses. It's fascinating to think about how our cats perceive the world, and we know a lot about that. How cats see, hear, smell, taste, and touch certainly affects how they understand the world around them, and can help us make their world more interesting and exciting.

However, it's important to understand that as much as we know, there's much we probably will never know. For me, this "otherness" is part of what makes cats so fascinating. When Yang Yang stares into a corner, I wonder what he sees. When Yin Yin suddenly runs into another room, I wonder what she is responding to. When Mei Mei backs away from an open door, I wonder how much she remembers about the time she spent as a stray.

We are so close -- my cats and I -- but we are also far apart. We are, after all, different animals. We struggle to understand one another, but we also enjoy the mystery of living with another species.
