My two oldest cats are tabbies, and Mei Mei, our white cat, has tabby patches on her head and sides, and a perfectly ringed tabby tail. Yin Yin is a lovely golden brown with black stripes and swirls, and her belly is a lovely tan and gold. Yang Yang is a perfect mackerel tabby, gray and brown with black stripes. He has gorgeous head markings, perfect rings around his neck and arms, and a gray and black spotted belly (a feature he uses to great advantage while competing in the Cute Olympics).
My husband and I, of course, are not tabbies. We do not have the letter M marked on our foreheads or black lines extending from the corners of our eyes. Our backs are not striped and our bellies are not spotted. I have never considered this to be a problem, but apparently, my husband has.
Recently he came home from the barber and told me how much he loves seeing his cut hair on the barbershop floor. Why? Because, he says, his mixture of brown and gray and black hairs looks like Yang Yang's spotted belly, and makes him feel like a tabby. Which makes him very happy.
