On the nights my husband and I spend the evening watching TV, my cats usually compete in the Cute Olympics. The games begin after the cats' dinner (which is served at 9 p.m.). They all settle down in the living room, on the couch, the ottoman or the comfy chair, and take up positions that are designed to be adorable and alluring. Often, Mei Mei will lie on her back next to my husband, with her paws curled in the air, showing her alternating pink and black toes. Yang Yang responds by placing his chin on his back foot, curling his tail neatly around his back and staring at us with melting, soulful eyes. Yin Yin comes on strong by curling herself into a perfect circle and then turning her head upside down.
As we praise and tickle each one, they shift into ever-cuter positions. Yin Yin and Yang Yang have the advantage that they sometimes curl up together on the comfy chair, holding hands in a way that is impossibly adorable. But Mei Mei counters by pulling my husband's hand down to cover her nose.
What does the winner of the Cute Olympics get? A few extra goodnight kisses. My cats seem to think that's worth competing for.
