Party Night

By Beth Adelman for Cat Facts

Last night I had a big dinner party, and one of my guests very thoughtfully brought catnip toys along with a bouquet of flowers. Mei Mei was appropriately adorable, rolling around with her little pink mouse and eventually falling asleep on her cat tree with the toy between her paws. My guests were charmed.

My tabbies, who are afraid of strangers, stayed in the bedroom until everyone had left, and then got their toys as well. Usually I pick up the catnip toys after about 20 minutes, but since it was already very late, I left them out for the night.

And what a night it must have been! This morning I found what appeared to be the aftermath of a VERY wild party. There was a huge hairball coughed up in the middle of the couch (my cats seldom have hairballs, and never, never, never on the couch -- I have seen Yin Yin step down daintily from her comfy chair before coughing one up). I keep a pot of cat grass, and there were several little piles of it puked up under the dining room table. The cloth napkins I had left in a heap on the dining room table were all over the house. And my little pot of chrysanthemums was on its side. It was like walking into a fraternity house the morning after the big pledge party.

The cats don't seem hung over at all, and ate a big breakfast. But no more all-night catnip parties for them!
