The Pet-Me Box

By Beth Adelman for Cat Facts

My two tabbies were once feral kittens, and when I first got them they could hardly bear to be touched. One way I helped them feel comfortable in my apartment was to put a cardboard box in each room, where they could hide and feel safe, yet still be with me. They first began to accept petting when they were in these boxes, and we still keep one in the bedroom. We call it the pet-me box.

My apartment is being painted at the moment, and everything is in a big pile in the middle of the living room, covered by several sheets of plastic. It's very stressful for the cats (not to mention me!), because the house is full of workmen and everything is out of place. But this weekend I peeked under the plastic to find Yin Yin had picked her way through the stacks of books and piles of furniture to wedge herself into the pet-me box. And Mei Mei had managed to slip into her little tent, which was sitting on the comfy chair in the center of an enormous pile of stuff. In stressful times, a little something familiar can mean a lot.
